EcoSchools UK

Energy is a key area for the Eco group. We think that possibly thousands of pounds are being wasted on energy at school. What are we doing about it?

Firstly, we registered for Energy Certification for Schools, the Energy Saving Trust's service for schools. We've found out how much energy IS being used, and some of it is certainly being wasted. Unfortunately we don't have the results of the EST survey in electronic format so we can't show you the details. However, you will hear more from the energy team in the next few weeks.

Secondly, a group of sixth formers are working on a BIG sustainable energy project. The idea is to build a wind turbine and then solar panels (so the heated water gets pumped around the chilly technology/science block). Team members Alistair, Tom and Ben created and maintained an ENERGY BLOG.

On November 4th we started our blitz on lights. The first part of the LIGHTS OFF campaign involved many volunteers, who, led by the energy team, checked every room in the school. they recorded whether lights were left on or had been switched off, and whether the room was occupied or not. We plan a few weeks of action and then will repeat the survey to see whether we've had any impact or not. Last summer,  a Year 9 group prepared stickers for lights. We have chosen the two best for this campaign.

AUTUMN TERM 2007

We have had BP's Carbon Challenge workshop to work with Year 11. the Crabon Trust still won't come in to help us because our bills aren't high emough!

Multi Mitchell gave an inspiring talk to the eco Group. he is going round UK in a zero carbon boat (see Projects 2007-8)

The sixth form have started to calculate the carbon footprint of the school. When they have entered the baseline data, other students will be invited to add to their data! This footprinting 'tool' was developed by the Field Studies Council for the DCSF.

We have taken part in Standby Saturday and have won a device that allows lots of appliance sto be switched off together!

Lots of students have chosen energy as a topic for the We Are What We DO competition entry.

Students have visited Minstead Study Centre to agin ideas that could make Ringwood more sustainable - especially when we have our next new building in 2008
