EcoSchools POND CLEARANCE
Home Page

We find both young NEWTS and  young lizards in the school grounds: here
The science pond has suffered from an invasion of Crassula helmsii. This plant can take over entire ponds, and, as the picture shows, has started to do this on our pond.

Volunteers Jack and Nick removed 75% after school on May 5th. It's important to try and remove every bit of this unwanted alien species. Read a report about the Crassula problem here.

Pond clearance underway: in addition to the removal of the Crassula, other aquatics were thinned out, so that now there is, once again, an area of clear water in the pond. All plants that were removed were left at the pond edge for a few days so that any invertebrates amongst them will be able to get back into the pond. The Crassula will be destroyed.

We have now found that the Greater Reedmace (bullrush) has completely ruined the wildlife pond. Unfortunately, it look as though we will have to start again from scratch. We have a BIG problem.
