Ringwood School has a great collection of trees. Some are British native species and other are exotic.

A TREE TRAIL allows everyone to identify key tree species in the ground

We are planning to do two trails in the schools grounds. The first is a TREE TRAIL. Year Six students joined forces with Ringwood students on this project as part of the work on the built environmentThe tree trail is now complete. The second is an ENVIRONMENTAL TRAIL that will lead students around the site, pointing out the type of work that the Eco group has been carrying out for the last two years. We plan to work on this duing 2006-007.

The TREE TRAIL

Year six students

  • Found out the names of all the trees on the school site, in English and in Latin! Click here.
  • Marked all these trees on a map of the school grounds
  • Extracted chlorophyll from plants in the science lab.
  • Made model trees out of lichen and stained them with the chlorophyll
  • Took photographs of every tree. Usually three photos were taken - of the whole tree, the leaf and the bark. Sample here!
  • Put the model trees onto the map of the built environment.
  • Used the map to write instructions for other children who will be following the trail.
  • Found out a few interesting details about some of the trees that  were included in the trail leaflet. Soem students made up a question or two about each tree.

And then...

  • Mr Edmonson and Mr Tomkins (in Technology) made labels for all the trees.
  • Mrs Hickman made all the tree photos into a small booklet
  • Instructions were written up in another small booklet so that children could follow the trail and identify the trees!
  • The trail leaflets will eventually appear HERE!
